NEWS ARTICLES
This news article highlights the struggles of Dalit women (a marginalised caste) in Punjab, India to secure their rights to leasing village common land to cultivate organically. Approximately 75% of rural Indian women are engaged in agriculture, yet only 12% of them own the land they cultivate - a pattern that is even more marked for marginalised communities. This lack of rights means that many women do not have access to government support systems, resulting in their reliance on common land as a source of livelihood.
