Women Farmers
&
Their Stories
Across the world, women play a central role in agri-food systems, yet they remain marginalised and under-represented.
Due to gendered norms, customs and legislation, women farmers and agri-food workers experience higher levels of precarity and exploitation; receive less pay and access to resources than men; and struggle to obtain social and legal recognition.
To highlight these structural inequalities and culturally embedded power dynamics, as well as their material impacts on women’s lives, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has launched The International Year of the Woman Farmer (IYWF 2026).
The Feminist Agroecology Network would like to contribute to this campaign, by shining a light on the stories of women farmers from across the world. We envision this to go beyond 2026, becoming a living archive of stories of women living from and with the land.
Going forward, we plan to publish a new story every other month and highlight it in our newsletter. Combining words with visuals, we hope this platform will become a space to share the kaleidoscopic realities of everyday life as a farmer - the struggles and joys, the acts of care and inequalities they experience, the human and multi-species connections.
Do you have a story to share?
As of 1st September 2026, we are open for submissions!

Please send us your story of between 500-800 words, plus up to 10 images. We are currently accepting stories in English, Turkish, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, and Hindi. We hope to expand the scope of languages in the future.
