SEPTEMBER 2025
Dear Network Members,
The AgroFutures Team is back with the monthly newsletter! We hope you’ve had some time to rest and are feeling re-energised!
As part of our discussions over the summer, we have decided to bring on board two more people to help us run the newsletter and expand the network’s coverage across broader geographical locations. This is an exciting opportunity for PhDs, early career academics, or members of agroecology movements around the world to contribute. There will be plenty of opportunities to discuss the future direction of the Network and to shape the newsletter into a more engaging and carefully edited piece of content. We will be in touch shortly with more details in an email.
In the meantime, we hope you enjoy reading this brief post-break newsletter.
Warmly,
The AgroFutures Team
MEDIA ARTICLES
As Israel's genocide of Palestinians in Gaza continues unabated, we share two news pieces on how the destruction of agricultural land, crops, and food sovereignty is being mobilised as a tool of war.
Israeli forces demolish seed multiplication unit of UAWC’s seed bank in Hebron – Via Campesina
Israel–Gaza war: Palestinian cropland destroyed, starvation deepens – The Guardian
For those who have not already read it, we would like to draw your attention to the United Nations report From Economy of Occupation to Economy of Genocide by Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese. The report denounces, in striking terms, the corporate machinery sustaining Israel’s settler-colonial project, naming the major corporate entities that have profited from Israel’s economy of illegal occupation, apartheid, and now genocide.
The section on agribusinesses is particularly relevant to people in this forum. It highlights how conglomerates such as Tnuva and Netafim (a global leader in drip irrigation technology) have enabled the exploitation of Palestinian land and water, driving widespread food and water insecurity. As the report states:
“In the Jordan Valley, Netafim-aided irrigation systems have facilitated Israeli crop expansion, while Palestinian farmers – denied water and with 93 per cent unirrigated land – are pushed out, unable to compete with Israeli production.”
The section concludes that “companies such as Tnuva and Netafim continue to manufacture food security for Israelis, while the food system to which they belong produces food insecurity – and even famine – for others. Netafim brands itself as a sustainable innovator, while in practice perfecting age-old techniques of colonial exploitation.”
